There were originally ten Spice Girls when the band was formed. The five that became the real Spice Girls killed, chopped up and buried the other five in a shallow grave. This is their story.
There was:
Tacky Spice - she really liked puffy scarves, heavy eye makeup, too much too strong perfume and always, always wore clothes that were too tight.
Old Spice - yeah, she was old but she was the best dancer of the bunch. And she smelled great too.
Scowly Spice - actually, Scowly Spice made it through the culling but emerged as Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham. She's retained alot of Scowly Spice's personality though since nobody has seen her teeth in at least ten years.
Sugar Ann Spice - the rest of the band decided her name was too cute and they tore her limb from limb backstage before their first gig at the Arkansas State Fair.
Slice Spice - she was going to be Scary's sidekick, the crazier one who liked to flick a switchblade all the time. The powers that be figured one crazy nutter Spice Girl was probably more than enough.
Kimbo Spice - somehow the addition of a burly, bearded, back yard bare knuckle brawler didn't quite fit with the hot pants, hair and hooters look of the rest of the band.

Ten Songs on a Desert Island
Ten Songs on a Desert Island
1. Hotel California by The Eagles
2. Everyday by Dave Matthews Band
3. Magical Colors (31 Flavors) by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
4. Time of Your Life by Green Day
5. Your Latest Trick by Dire Straits
6. Where'd You Go by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
7. Pawn Shop by Sublime
8. Tea in the Sahara by The Police
9. Tangled Up in Blue by Bob Dylan
10. Meanwhile, Rick James by Cake
This list is entirely subjective and it really only represents my state of mind at this instant in time. I'm sure if I came back to this tomorrow, I'd replace at least one and probably several songs.
The other thing is, if I listened to just these ten songs again and again and again then I'd end up so sick of them that I'd probably hate them. Also, how are the songs played anyway? What powers the player?
Oh well, that's the thing with hypotheticals, they break down if you look at them too closely.
What are your top ten desert island songs?

Accesible Music
Between the new Genius playlist system in iTunes and Pandora's instant internet radio on my iPhone, I've been having an easy and good time of creating excellent playlists on the fly.
The nice thing about the Genius playlist creation is that its easy to remove songs that don't fit, click refresh and that song is replaced by a, hopefully, better fit for the mix. I wish the same functionality was built into the iPhone version of the Genius function.
But I'm not really complaining, just digging on having a never-ending supply of good music to enjoy. And finding those long-lost hidden nuggets of sonic brilliance!

Musical Genres I Just Don't Really Get
One of the best and coolest things about the internet age has been the easy access to music from any genre. File sharing makes it simple to amass a rather ridiculously huge music collection without a whole lot of effort, at least on the front end.
Some fall out from all of this music I've amassed is that I've got multiple, overlapping libraries. That is, several large folders filled with music that's partially duplicated in other large folders filled with music. Up until now, there's been no simple way of consolidating the files into one massive master folder.
But, with a large external hard drive to temporarily store stuff on and iTunes 7 (or whatever number it is now) I've been able to combine all of these disparate music folders into one huge ass folder with more than 80 gigs of music.
Now comes the fun part of de-duping within iTunes. Basically Apple-clicking duplicate songs and then deleting them. It seems like it could be really easy to automate but there's plenty of songs I actually want the multiple copies of, some songs are live, some are covers, some are compilations, some are duets. Anyway, the process is ongoing, tedious and slow but will result in a sparkling clean music library.
However, this post wasn't so much about all of the music I've accumulated but rather than some of it is just too alien and outside my tastes.
I've learned that I like some Blues but find it gets pretty repetitive quickly and starts to sound an awful lot alike. I've found that I don't really care for Jazz much. And I find 99% of country music to pretty much suck.
Just as I tend to find heavy metal to be tedious, repetitive and mostly unlistenable. And yes, that includes its demon spinoffs, speed metal, death metal, grunge metal and folk metal (yeah, I made the last one up).
And, during my delightful time here in Watsonville, I've been exposed to more crappy Mexican music than you could even begin to imagine. Or maybe its just the same crappy Mexican song played over and over again at varying volumes, I can't really tell nor do I really care. It's awful crap and it really doesn't get even a tiny bit better when its turned up so loud I can hear it a block away.
Oh yeah, celeb-rock. When idiot pop-tarts have been sniffing their own farts too much and somehow think they can sing. Did you happen to know that Lindsay Lohan is currently working on her third or fourth CD? Or utter morons like Paris Hilton, who isn't a celebrity, singing her perfect crap music. Scarlett Johannson is another ego wanking singer who can't sing worth a pile of beans but is eagerly working on her second album. Why?
All of this bitching and whining might make a reader wonder what kind of music I actually do like since the list of stuff I don't like is pretty extensive.
Well then. I have always loved classic rock like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, The Who, The Police and others of the same ilk. I love Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley, Junior Gong, Pato Banton, Yellowman, Eek-a-Mouse, Third World, Inka Inka, Peter Tosh and a whole host of reggae stars I'm overlooking. I love ska, especially punky ska like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones but also Madness, Desmond Dekker, the Skatalites, Sublime and No Doubt (though they are less and less ska and much more mainstream rock). I do not like crap like Reel Big Fish. I like island music like Harry Belafonte, Baja Men (they have many more songs than the one overplayed but still entertaining Who Let the Dogs Out), Shaggy, Jimmy Buffett and steel drum bands.
I like clever music like Handsome Boy Modeling School. I like bluesy-rock like The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. I like alternative music like Weezer, Wilco and Cake.
What it comes down is liking what I like, knowing what I don't like and going with what works over what doesn't. My wife says my musical tastes reflect my inability to keep focused on anything for very long, she calls it ADD music. Which is fine, I still know what I like.

One Major Step Done in the iTunes Library Consolidation
Without much fanfare yesterday afternoon I completed step one in a long project to consolidate and clean up and categorize and make the most of my iTunes libraries. I'd somehow gotten myself into an arrangement with multiple libraries with lots of crossover music but no one place where all of it resided together.
When I got my laptop back from Apple with a much larger hard drive I was given the opportunity to drag and drop four or five libraries into iTunes and then go through the slow process of removing duplicates. When I started I had more than 6000 duplicated songs, most were simple dupes but a good proportion were live versions of studio songs and not really things I wanted to get rid of.
I did a little bit here and there every few nights and, over the course of about a month, whittled down the duplicate list.
The next step has already begun, making sure all of an artist is listed in the same genre, adding ratings and re-categorizing songs in their own unique genre (I've got stuff like House Punk, Retro Dancehall, one just labeled cmz, Soft Rock and more).
The next consolidation project after the music one is to collect all of my photos (somewhere around 20,000 of them by now).

19 Songs You Need to Have
Taking a cue from Courtney and her post about 19 songs from a couple of months ago, here is my list. Guaranteed to get your foot tapping and your head bobbing, unless you suck. Or something. If I were burning this to a disc for playback in the car I'd be reordering things some but I'll leave it as it is.
1. Life's Been Good - Joe Walsh
2. Breakdown - Handsome Boy Modeling School
3. Magical Colors (31 Flavors) - The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
4. Get Over It - Ok Go!
5. 25 Miles - Edwin Starr
6. I Don't Want to Work (I Just Want to Bang on My Drums) - Todd Rundgren
7. Mirror in the Bathroom - English Beat
8. Our House - Madness
9. Side to Side - Blackalicious
10. Hotel California - The Eagles
11. Where'd You Go - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
12. The Natives are Restless - Don Tiki
13. Baba O'Reilly - The Who
14. Your Latest Trick - Dire Straits
15. Everyday - Dave Matthews Band
16. War - Bob Marley and the Wailers
17. Tea in the Sahara - The Police
18. Blackbird - The Beatles
19. Imagine - John Lennon
I'm sure I could trade out every one of these songs for other great songs that I love but this is where I am right now.

Time Machine iPhone
Random play is a wanderful thing (yes, I meant that and will post the new word shortly). Random music will pop and up I will instantly be transported back in time to another place in my life.
Such as Duran Duran's Hungry Like the Wolf that's playing right now. I can close my eyes and be instantly back in Lisa Colt's room hanging out with her and having her explain to me all of the sexual nuancery in the music.
I also recall it was a turn-on watching and listening to her mimic the moans in the song (there are seven if I recall). Lisa was the adopted daughter of my mom's boyfriend at the time. She was a few years older than I was but we got along well, I found out later why she got along with me so well when we, umm, had a little fun together one night.
Anyway, I'm sure my mom will love reading that bit. But this little traipse down memory lane serves to remind me that I need to start adding to my music again. I haven't gotten any new music in a little while now, not that I'm complaining as I've got a pretty decent sized collection to begin with and, let's face it, Led Zep, The Doors and The Police aren't recording any new music anyway. But that doesn't mean there isn't any good new music, I just haven't had the time to go hunting.

Initiate Musical Meme
Because I cannot spend my life finding new music to enjoy, I have to rely on the magical internets to provide me with new tracks to get my groove on to. But sometimes that new music takes too damned long to find.
So I thought of a way to jumpstart the process. It has no name yet but the concept is pretty simple. I'm going to start a playlist here with a song and then I'll invite readers to post a comment and repost the meme on their site to gather in more music. At some point the music will have to get uploaded or made available for download because the end concept is to deliver an excellent new playlist to all of the participants.
Did any of that make any sense? If not then let's just pretend it did and move forward. I'll update this post as new songs are joined to the list.
And hey, random idea, I just thought about posting two songs and allowing the other participants to vote on which of the two makes the cut but that'll complicate the endeavor some. I am, as always, open to ideas of how to make it better. Also, this reminds me that I need to finish up my last Cheddar X before it becomes a distant memory.
The theme of the first collaborative playlist is: Up Music

Today's Theme Song Brought To You By Ok Go
I think I've already written about Ok Go's Get Over It before. But I don't really care, I'm going to write about it again because it is that freaking good and it perfectly fits my mood.
If I could have this song playing at annoying-shake-pictures-on-walls-at-300-feet volume all day long then I'd be a happy camper. Maybe mix it up with a little Mighty Mighty Bosstones but I could probably do several hours of Get Over It before I needed a break.
And I'll lament the non-anonymity of this blog. But I have other blogs for raw venting and explorations of different realities because, sad to say, this current one ain't much fun these days.
Aside from the wrestling match I had with my boys last night before bed. They get all amped up and jumpy and playful and we roll around on the bed for a half hour or so until we get too tired and then we curl up together and read a book to "come down" a bit.
Rather than focusing on the unhappy, I'm going to hit replay and just Get Over It (again). It never fails to amaze me how music can alter or invert a bad mood. What's your go-to song when you need a pick-me-up?

Anthem Groovin'
In case anyone was interested, I've been listening to Ok Go's Get Over It again and again and again. I'm sure I'm a year or two behind the curve but that's alright. Its still a great song.
I'm compiling an album of anthems like this one. Got any you feel would be in good company? Pass them along in comments. Stuff likeTeenage Wasteland (thanks Easy!) Baba O'Reilly by The Who or The End by The Doors is what I'm looking for so bring it on!
[Update: The playlist is growing! Here's where we are right now, order may be adjusted though. Once its in a good enough shape, I'll add links to the songs.

Fun with Online Virtual Synthesizers
I came across an article on Real Tech News about the Tony-b Machine, its an online virtual synthesizer controlled via keyboard and mouse that's pretty fun to play around with. I'm not a mixmaster by any stretch but it is pretty easy to lay down some funky beats, add some cool sounds over it and then record the whole thing to share with others.
Get your groove on and have some fun!

Sweet Land of Gluttony
Inspired by that awful commercial I saw last night. (Note, this is just a lark and not meant to injure anyone's feelings).
Sung to the tune of America (My Country Tis of Thee)
My country, tis of thee
Sweet land of gluttony, of thee I cringe
Land of the super sized
Land of the gluttonized
From every tableside let's go and binge
My fattened country, thee
Land of obesity, thy fries I love
I eat thy buffet meals
Fast foods and special deals
My heart with cholesterol, like that above
Let our fat grow with ease
And jiggle down to our knees, sweet fatty's song;
Let mortality take
Let all that lardass shake
Let farts their silence break, that sound so wrong
Our waistband's growth, to thee
Sweet land of obesity, to thee we bring
Long may our belts get tight
With our fork's holy might
Send us a large pizza with everything.

Turn It On, Turn It Up and Get Off
Can Sound Induce Orgasm?
The Brown Note may not exist but what about the Pink Note?
Anyone have any experience with orgasmic events and certain music? I could make arguments for the possibility of the existence of the pink note both ways.
