A Step Forward for Security, A Step Backward for Privacy?
Twins Crack Facial Recognition Problem
Using a 3d scanner and some search engine based algorithms, a pair of Israeli twins have succeeded in creating a machine that can map your facial signature in three dimensions (current methods use 2d and are much less accurate).

It will be possible, in a few years, to use this system on a crowd of people at the airport, or a baseball stadium and be able to pick out, with a very high degree of certainty, those people you don't want there. The twins tested the system on themselves and, though they are physically identical, the system was able to differentiate accurately between the two of them.

Cool stuff but it also feels a little like a Big Brother issue as well. Any public place could have this system installed and it could (and likely will be) used by local police as well as the FBI and CIA to track down and capture terrorists. I just hope it doesn't devolve into a constant witch hunt. But it is the edge we tread when security and privacy bump heads.

AND, SCAM ALERT
Just saw this in the news, PayPal Users Being Scammed in which emails are sent out to Ebayers who use PayPal saying their accounts are being upgraded and all you need to do is fill in the credit card info, your bank name and account numbers and all that stuff into the email.

PEOPLE, do not ever, ever, ever give your financial information to some email. Don't fill out forms in emails if you can go to their secure site instead. And in fact, let the company know that they're sending out dangerous communications. Just like Wells Fargo uses social security numbers to log on to their website instead of a passcode. It makes me uncomfortable doing it. Part of the reason I'm moving all of my money out of that bank.

Any reputable company will never send an email asking for account details in the email. And any email that asks for this information should be treated with great suspicion.
