Legislators Take Note: The Will of the People is to Legalize Pot

Today's Excite Poll Results
Would you/do you support or oppose legalized medical marijuana use in your state?

Support 76% => 8784 votes
Oppose 17% => 2073 votes
I'm not sure 4% => 506 votes
I don't care 1% => 183 votes
Current number of voters: 11546

A couple of things to note. A response rate of more than 11,000 is a pretty good sample and goes a long way to validating the results. But there are some issues with the audience. They all have to be computer users who also happen to go to Excite and also decided to vote today.

That's just a minor caveat in the process but the overwhelming support of 76 to 17 percent really should send a strong message to legislators. Medical marijuana isn't the demon weed that people think it is. It can help people. If it came in a pill form would there be any pushback at all?

As an aside, the iWon poll results are more or less the same, slightly down from these numbers but they also take the poll a little further and ask about federal legalization of medical marijuana which comes in at 68 to 18 percent. Then they ask about legalizing pot for recreational use and the numbers switch sharply to 30% for and 58% against on the state level. On the federal level the numbers are a little sharper at 29% and 59%.

I'd be curious as to how many people would vote to make cigarettes illegal or maybe alcohol illegal as a comparison. Which reminds me, there's legislation afoot to make it a crime to smoke in your car with infants. This is great news and a good first step in to breaking Big Tobacco's first tier recruitment tactics. Early exposure to cigarette smoke can foster a sense of nostalgia later on in life. And anyway that we can break people of the disgusting and dangerous habit of smoking cigarettes is a good step!
