A Sweet and Poignant Moment

Earlier this evening, when I was upstairs in my office trying to catch up on emails, news and the 'net now that I'm back on the big pipe DSL, and while I was chatting with my sister back on the east coast (lots of excitement over the new baby boy!), I heard P call out to me.

It wasn't one of those "Hey, whatcha up to?" calls, it was a "I'm in pain and need you right now" calls. I ran downstairs to see what was wrong and she was shivering beneath her blanket and complaining of being freezing cold. After getting her bundled up more properly in a long sleeve thermal, a wool hat and some warm wool socks, she also complained about a pain along her c-section scar.

Upon closer examination it turned out that the nurse had missed one of the small staples they'd used to close her top layer back up with after the surgery. And, given the way she'd been lying on the couch, it had been digging into her side and causing no small measure of discomfort.

I called the hospital and spoke with someone in the maternity ward about the problem. Our options were to go back in tonight to get it removed since it needed to be pulled with a special tool, go back in tomorrow to get it removed or check with our pediatrician to see if they had the tool and could remove it since we're going to be over there tomorrow anyway.

Anyway, all of that is just the background to this one very touching moment I saw when I came down. There was P, lying on the couch in shivering and in pain, and there was Nande, sitting just on the side of the couch, as close as she could get. Looking towards P and wishing that she could help. It was just truly touching and both of us have been pretty impressed with how well Nande has reacted to the baby boy and to P's fragile condition. I can't even begin to say how much I missed her over these last days since we've been in the hospital. And now that we're all home together again, knowing what an awesome and empathetic dog we have is incredibly wonderful on top of all of the other amazing events of the last few days.

We have a house that is steeped in deeply rooted love and it just about kills me. I love my son, my wife and my dog unconditionally and would do anything for them.

And yeah, don't worry, I'm going to be working on more Baby Graydon pictures this evening and tomorrow.
