There's an awful lot of brain cycles and speculation about one of my longest reads online, Plain Layne, in the wake of her most recent disappearing act.
Is she real, is she a creative writing student's construct, a class assignment run far, far too long? Is she really the girl that's been fed through the ringer so many times that she's qualified for frequent ringer miles? Is she really this info-waif bi-sexual cum lesbian cum middle management fast tracker through a nameless corporation's ranks? Can she be real?
Do all of the various and many faceted pieces of her published life fit together into one magnificent and magnificently flawed puzzle of this enigmatic woman with a shy smile, raging libido and desperate need for validation, direction and deprecation?
My desire is to think that she is real, that her problems are real, that her situations (while maybe exagerated for shock value, who passes out with a vibrator in their butt?) are real, that her life isn't just a big old hoax upon us all.
And there is a big "us all" in regards to Layne. Her blog has been read by an ever growing group of people that have been sucked into the maelstrom that is her life, from bizarre sexual escapades to the maddening ridiculousness of the corporate world to her very tender posts about spending time with David, Cassie, Casey and Garth to the almost forgotten Love Offensive with Trish that signaled the end of their friendship as Trish landed a good man and disappeared into suburbia with her Evian bottle and cameltoe spandex shorts.
I'd like to think she's real but its harder and harder to believe. Lots of things don't add up, things like the Spanish stripper that Joshua discusses. Things like the wedding invitation that never made it to her and bounced back to me with a bad address stamp on it but it was the exact address she'd given me. The fact that none of her readers have ever met her in person, in fact, there's no verified reports of any one ever meeting her in person. Apparently I was thought to have met her once but that was just how we initially came in contact and she got me blogging.
I want to believe but its becoming harder and harder to maintain that faith (and I've already well documented my issues with faith in the absence of any reasonable proof).
There's a flurry of blogging about this though and I'd recommend reading as much of it as you like. Ryan, David, Joshua and more as the network spreads its detective wings to try and reason out the truth or untruth of Layne's reality.
Stay tuned because I don't think we've gotten to the last chapter of the story yet.....
