Good News Morning

Today was a productive morning already. We filed our taxes this morning and, in deference to Ryan I will not discuss the terms of the deal but will say that we did well this year and now I have a much better understanding of why gay marriage can be such a big deal aside from the societal ones. You get more money back if you're married, simple as that.

And then, I headed over to the DMV a full half an hour before they opened. On the way over there, I had to pass a cop which gave me that moment of "Oh shit, I'm gonna get a ticket on the way to becoming legal! Fuck!" but it was all good, he was stopping by some house. The line at the DMV was just about halfway around the building when I pulled up. Luckily I had some entertainment materials with me and stood against the wall with my iPod on and reading Darr Houssen's Dog Obedience School which is an excellent manual for starting off a puppy the right way. I've already read it once but am going to read it a few more times so that we start off the pup right. More on the puppy naming process below. Part of the reason the DMV was so busy is because the office service the Santa Cruz area has been temporarily closed for remodelling or something. So everyone and their brother is heading down to the Watsonville office.

Anyway, once I got to the counter, I had the good luck to have the nice, young and attractive lady help me out. I gave her the title, had my insurance and smog certs as well but she punched the title info and then gave me my total, easy as that. Lickety split, I was out the door with registration and the all important sticker for the plate in hand though $185 lighter in the wallet. But I can get back to flipping off the cops on the highway and exceeding the speed limit in stupid ways.

The Puppy Naming Game
I came across African Names last night after reading seed's comment on the Name That Puppy Post from yesterday. He suggested going with authors and scientists for naming fodder. Which works for me but I had to take it in my own direction. Having lived in Africa and mixed my blood and sweat with the continent left an indelible mark on me so it makes sense to me to consider some African based names. To that end, here are five that I liked enough to copy here. I'm leaning towards Nande but like Minkah though I will tend to pronounce it Min-kah and not men-kah as the pronounciation table suggests.

The meaning of the names was also a major influence in which ones passed muster. Where the name comes from was also kind of cool to know.

Adebanke - God is taking care of her (Yoruba of Nigeria)
Ainka (A-ink-kay) - The cherished one (Tonga)
Kaimah (kama or Kay-ma) - Tiny one (Liberia)
Minkah (Men-kah) - Justice ( Tanzania)
Nande (Nan-day) - Mother of Chaka Zulu

And, because I am wholly incapable of not having some fun, I give to you the Louis Farrakhan African Name Generator which came up with some damned funny names for me. Among them, Shebelle, Buckwheat and Shetswa.
