TechTV was one of the channels I was initially very excited to have had added to my channel selections. It has pretty rapidly become yet another channel I skip right over but not for the usual reasons. You know, crappy programming, lame shows and irritating commercials.
Nope, TechTV is going to eventually fail because they have, hands down, the most irritating and self absorbed idiotic show hosts of any station ever. With the exception of The Screensavers, pretty much every other show has people that shouldn't be given carte blanche to display their incredibly smack worthy personalities.
Let's do a quick rundown.
X-Play - Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb. They wanted to be stand up comedians growing up but they couldn't because they aren't funny at all. In any way. They are obnoxious egotists who think that they're terribly stupid jokes are the height of humor and the show that should be about game reviews is more about their antics and stupidity. Neither of these two should be on television.
Fresh Gear - whatever the host's name is, Chris something or other, he needs to quit trying to be funny. He's not. His self deprecating humor is tired and bad. In fact, any humor based on debasing yourself is stupid and needs to stop. The other folks on the show are watchable but they all have this infection of wanna-be-comic-itis. If you were funny then you would be a comedian. You're not a comedian so stop trying to be funny with your stupid little jokes.
Unscrewed - Martin Sargent is probably the most aggravating asshole on tv right now. His jokes come straight from the early 80's (think my cousin's in an asylum and its driving him crazy type stupid old humor). He's ugly, stupid and needs to get off the air. His show could be interesting if he could lose his bad humor and focus on the show's subjects (basically, sex and porn and porn products like USB enabled dildos) and the subject matter should be plenty enough to keep people entertained without this wee minded douchebag. He also needs to get a haircut or at least shower before going on the show with his nappy little hat head look.
Its not all garbage humor done by people who spent way too much time hanging out with the A/V club in high school. There are several shows that go a little ways to redeeming the idiocy of the others. The Screensavers is a good show that isn't devoid of humor but the show isn't being used as a vehicle to demonstrate just how unfunny the hosts are. The show is about helping people out with tech problems and talking about some of the tech coming out. Hey, what a concept.
Body Hits and Invent This are pretty good shows that stick to what the show is about. Body Hits is about the damage being incurred to your body during a night out or a weekend in Cancun. Pretty interesting stuff to know how eight beers will affect your system and why. Invent This is fascinating because it shows how ordinary people have pursued their invention dreams and failed before the succeeded. And you can also get a chance to see how truly wacked and crazy some of these geniuses are.
I like TechTV, I would like the shows I hate if they could only smack the idiot hosts and get them off their egoist horse and back on the subjects they're supposed to be discussing. X-Play might just need new hosts altogether and little Adam and doofy Morgan can go and get real jobs where their audience being forced to listen to their insipid humor will be far, far smaller (though its arguable that fringe cable audiences are pretty small to begin with).
Oh yeah, the bouncing art cam angles during reports? Yeah, they can stop that too. Edgy and cool is good, edgy and irritating isn't quite so good.
