Big Sports Weekend Coming Up!

This Saturday is going to be one of epic sporting awesomeness! We are going to the San Francisco Giants FanFest during the day and then there is the rather superb card of fights on tap for UFC 126. Seriously, this card is rocking! And, oh yeah, there's a little football game on Sunday to determine the greatest team in the entire universe (or America). I'm a Steelers fan and expect a great game with the Steelers emerging victorious!

What a Night, Oh Man!, What a Night!

As if the Giants working hard to win game six of the NLCS to advance to the World Series against the Rangers wasn't enough (believe me, it was!) there was also one of the most amazingly stacked fight cards in the history of the UFC on last night as well.

I had the Giants game on the big screen tv in all its HD glory and rode the Giants Torture Roller Coaster all the way through until Juan Uribe put the Giants on top in the 8th with a solo home run. It was torture but it was the sort of delicious torture that you just know is going to end up the way you want it to, with a victory.

Sports Wrap

This was a pretty good weekend for sporting activities. With the Sharks pushing hard to make it past the second round of the NHL playoffs, the Giants going into the weekend with a series sweep and the fourth winning series in a row and a rather stacked UFC 113 card, this was a good weekend to slug out and make sweet love to the television remote.

If only those pesky kids didn't keep wanting stuff...

Between my wife's Saturday appointments and Sunday being both Mother's Day and Sullivan's fourth birthday, there wasn't a whole ton of time for me to do me stuff. Not that I'm really complaining too much. Well, maybe a little.

The Giants nearly got swept by the Mets after losing the first two games but they pulled out the win yesterday even though Tim Lincecum didn't get the win like he totally deserved. Just like his last start but that's baseball, sometimes you do everything right and you still don't get the win.

I didn't get to watch any of the Sharks games because we don't have the cable anymore but I followed them online and did log in to catch a few minutes of live action every so often. After the 7-1 drubbing the game before, the Sharks re-established themselves and took care of business against the Red Wings.

But the main event of the weekend was UFC 113 featuring some big match ups. The fight between Koscheck and Paul Daley was billed to be a barn burning slug fest. The rematch between Lyoto Machida and Shogun was also looking solid. I'd not given Kos much of a chance in his fight having seen Daley walk through his last couple of fights. But Kos had a great game plan and applied it perfectly. A striker clearly has the advantage when the fight is on the feet but he is at a clear disadvantage when put on his back. And all I could think of when Daley was on his back was Houston Alexander who is damned scary on his feet, he throws wicked hands and has truly devastating knees. But when he's on his back he's like a turtle. And once the fighters figured that out, he was done. We'll see if Daley can reload his game and overcome this loss. But apparently he won't ever fight in the UFC again because of his classless antics after the fight was over. Cheap shots and sucker punches are never, ever a way to endear yourself to fans or Dana White.

And Kimbo Slice fought again in the UFC. He also lost again in the UFC and looks like he's not going to get another chance to fight for the UFC. I give Kimbo lots of props for his heart and effort but he's never going to be even a middle of the road mixed martial artist. He's a decent backyard brawler but he will get his ass handed to him every time by a dedicated mixed martial artist.

And, as always, Tom Lawlor spiced everything up with his antics, humor and sweet, sweet mustache. Shame he wasn't able to capitalize and get the W as well. He had been working Doerkson but got caught and then got choked out. Oops. He's still a fan favorite but he needs to get some wins rolling! And I'd like to see the Marcus Davis versus Jonathan Goulet fight sometime.

And let's not forget or overlook Dallas Braden's perfect game yesterday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (one of the hottest teams in all of baseball right now). This is the guy who got national interest when he yelled down A-Rod for walking over his pitcher's mound on the way back to the dug out a couple of weeks ago. A-Rod was headed back to his dugout after getting thrown out at 3rd and thought it would be a good idea to walk over the top of the pitcher's mound. Only Braden didn't think so and started to shout at him to get the hell off his mound. And many people thought Braden was finding something to get pissed about. Maybe he was but I think he had a good point. The pitcher's mound is his office, he had it set up the way he wanted, A-Rod had absolutely no business or need to go walking through his office. That was just lame and yet another sign that A-Rod's a self-absorbed douchebag.

On the personal exercise front I still find myself lost in the post triathlon malaise. My legs feel tired, my brain feels tired and I know I need to get some exercise but I just can't see to pull the trigger and make it happen. I think I may need to find another race to focus on to start training for in order to kick the jams back out and get back on the training track.

I'm hoping that we are able to get back on a regular-esque schedule this week. I think we all need to re-settle down and get back to something more resembling a routine. It'd be helpful for me, that's for sure.

Bailouts and Bullets

I haven't posted anything about the proposed Big 3 Automaker bailout yet nor have I said anything about Plaxico Burress' self-inflicted drunken gun shot wound. So I thought I'd kill two birds at once.

The first, I don't support a bailout of Ford, GM and Chrysler. GM and Chrysler make shitty cars, they've always made shitty cars and they've shown no signs of improving their product. Ford is the most viable of the three, they make decent cars and have demonstrated an interest in making better cars. But it isn't even really about the product entirely. Its about allowing a free market to function as a free market, that means profits and losses. What the Big 3 are doing now is attempting to create a win/win situation for themselves, a free market profit system protected by socialized risk.

And, sorry, but that's bogus. Chrysler has been bailed out before, they didn't learn and I strongly believe they should be allowed to wither and die. GM doesn't really do much innovation, they're like an off-kilter copy machine making bad copies of other cars.

Plus, the whole three private jets to Washington thing was ridiculous. And the second round of driving from Detroit to Washington in hybrids is equally stupid. Just fly commercially and quit trying to make a statement about how contrite you are when we all know you very obviously are not.

On to Plaxico Burress.
F*cktard behaviors:
Being fined 40-50 times by your own team.
Taking a gun to a nightclub.
Not having a license to carry said pistol.
Not bothering to secure the gun in a holster.
Owning a gun without a real safety.
Drinking with a gun in your belt.
Trying to give a fake name to the hospital.
Convincing the hospital to not report the gun shot wound.

Did I miss any?
While I don't put Plaxico Burress on anywhere near the same plane as Michael Vick (who should never be allowed on an NFL field for any reason whatsoever), Burress has demonstrated an appalling lack of judgment.

Rough Start

The week has gotten off to a slightly rough, slightly late start thus far. Between the boys getting their sleep patterns all mashed up last night with late naps and later bedtimes and the generalized stress of the start of the workweek and then toss my wife's birthday in on top of everything and you've got a recipe for meltdown mania.

I hope things start to smooth out sooner rather than later since I'm now at work and unable to provide assistance.

Some thoughts on the weekend:
Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live was lame and SNL should be ashamed for helping to promote her. I've heard she's already been offered a position with Fox News once the election is over and her ticket gets crushed.

The Red Sox just didn't quite have enough in the tank to get by the Devil Rays. They put up a good show, came from far, far behind to tie it up but just couldn't quite get over the top. A Phillies and Devil Rays World Series isn't the worst thing that could have happened though and it'll be interesting at the very least. Besides, the distinct lack of Yankees in the post season has already made winners of us all.

The latest UFC Fight Night had some good fights, I haven't gotten through the whole show yet but the Paul Kelly/Marcus Davis fight was good action and the Lytle/Taylor match was very good. I think Brandon Vera's just about done in the UFC, he can't keep putting up pretty mediocre fights and expect to stay in the big leagues.

The slowly dying freezer at home just adds to the general chaos of our life and not really in a good way. It complicates things tremendously and is forcing us to spend time on it when we don't really have time to spare.

We did have a good time at a lumberjack party up above Scotts Valley yesterday. It always amazes me at just how totally different someone else's home environment is like. Their house couldn't be any more different than mine if it were on the moon. While Sully and I were hanging out on the deck, two deer came up from the mostly dried up stream below, they circled the house and then made their way up the street to the next house. There haven't been deer near my house in probably twenty years. The house was Santa Cruz old-school hippy funky which meant that it had lots of interesting spaces, a sunken living room, a big deck, lots of sun, privacy and it was really quiet.

Plus they had a 26 ton log splitter available to help grind through the rather large pile of wood that had accumulated. And nothing says fun like a gas-powered log splitter!

The weekend, as most weekends seem to, went by too quickly and not enough stuff got done although I was able to knock off some minor list items on Saturday with the boys. But it isn't quite enough and we start the week just a little bit further behind than we left last week.

I wish I'd been able to give my wife exactly what she really wants for her birthday, a day off to catch up. But that'll have to wait until I've got a day to give her. Things aren't exactly easy these days but we're getting through it all together as best we can.

I did not get a chance to go riding this weekend but that's only partially because I'm a lazy guy, I torqued up my shoulder towards the end of last week and I'm not quite sure if its going to play nicely right now. Its been pretty sore all weekend but feels a little better this morning, maybe that's just wishful thinking though. We'll see.

Today is going to be a grind from start to finish, whenever that might end up being.

Fantasy Sports Focus

So with the end of the regular season of baseball and football ramping up and hockey just around the corner, I thought it was high time for a little fantasy sports breakdown.

Of the three fantasy baseball teams I played this season, I came in 2nd, 2nd and 1st respectively. Rick destroyed everyone in one league and I squeaked into the running for league #2 only to get annihilated 10-0 in the final. But in my last league, I was able to barely get through the semi's by an odd tie breaker and then eke out a victory by just a couple of points to take the season win.

Not too bad on the fantasy baseball front at all.

Fantasy football got off to a rough start beginning with the auto-draft "scoring" me Matt Hasselback (yes, the one married to the big foreheaded GOP parrot annoyance on The View, Elizabeth) of the sucktastic Seahawks and Stephen Jackson of the pathetically awful Rams. Two games into the season and I was still looking for my first W.

A squeaker got me on the board and then I had Brett Favre playing this week when he threw for a record 6 touchdowns against the Cards. Not a bad play at all. This week I have brought the heaviest smackdown of the season and am evening my record to 2-2.

I am also positioned for a local football pool win tonight if Big Ben and the Steelers can put together a win over the Ravens which will not be easy. But it is doable and that's what matters.

And last, the fantasy hockey league needs more teams. Want to play? (I will freely note that I pretty well suck at Fantasy Hockey and am just a body to skate over by some fanatical Shark fan friends). If you want in then leave a comment with your email address and I'll get an invite out to you.

Did you notice a lack of fantasy basketball news? That's because I find basketball to be, overall, a boring ass piss poor sport that lauds flopping, pimpsmanship and generalized douchebaggery from players, owners and fans alike.

Oh and one word to my Mets fan pal, John. Dude! Duuuuuuuude! And, last word to the long suffering gentlemen of the Mint 400, I hope this is your year and I further hope the Cubs get to pound the Dodgers down and out. Because I am all about cheering for whoever is playing against the Dodgers and the Yankees. Plus, Chicago's a great sports town and deserves to finally move past Steve Bartman (who I still think is wrongly blamed).

Also, I didn't take Washington yesterday but I love that they beat the Cowboys! Love it, love it, love it! And not just because Tony Romo sold his soul to Jessica "Toot Toot" Simpson.

Besides, any post season without the frickin' Yankees is a post season I can enjoy! Go Steelers!

Add A Solid MMA Day in There Too

Today also has finally seen the shutting up of the little mouth that could in Matt Serra fighting Georges St. Pierre. Matt Serra has been on my MMA radar for a little while now. He's a loud mouthed New Yorker guy who's got just the right amount of nasal in his voice to make it impervious to doors, walls or miles. One of those voices that you can't shut up once it starts up.

Suffice it to say that I look forward to his fights solely in the hopes of watching him get his ass kicked.

And he got his ass kicked tonight. So I'm an even happier camper.

Some of the fighters I know on the undercard had good nights too. Rich Franklin got back to his winning ways and it appears the only fighter who has his number is Anderson Silva, the reigning champ who's dismantled Franklin twice. Nate Quarry won his fight against Kalib Starnes, who, according to reports, did almost nothing but back up the entire fight. If he fights in the UFC again I will be absolutely shocked as Dana White, the UFC president, HATES a lame fight. Mac Danzig won his first fight since winning The Ultimate Fighter 6, I like the guy and enjoy his fighting style. And Ed Herman lost, that always brings a smile to my face too.

But the big smile is all about Matt Serra not only not vindicating his lucky first match victory over GSP but getting beat down pretty good in the process of losing his belt and any hope of ever being considered one of the best fighters in the world (GSP is ranked #2 in the world on the Yahoo MMA rankings). With some luck, Serra will go home to New Yawk where only the eastern seaboard will have to listen to his annoyance yapping.

[Update: Thanks to the wonders of the interwebs, I've now seen three of the fights from tonight including the main event. Basically, GSP dismantled then beat then kneed then celebrated. Serra looked feisty once or twice but the entire match was dominated by GSP. He is an outstanding fighter who shouldn't have lost to Serra in the first place. If there's a third rematch, I expect GSP will kick his ass all over the octagon again. The Rich Franklin/Lutter fight was pretty good for the most part, when Lutter gassed out he became pretty easy prey for Franklin to tee off on. And the Bisping/McCarthy fight was nice to watch too. Bisping's a good fighter with a big mouth. The only other time I saw McCarthy fight it was one of the three worst fights I've ever seen in MMA mostly because of his love taps to the abdomen style of fighting.

Good fights, good action. Maybe I'll check out a few more tomorrow. Supposed to be a good knockout or two in the mix.]

Weekend Sports Wrap

The perfect season didn't end so perfectly for the New England Patriots. They fell to the New York Giants to put a period and not an exclamation point on an undefeated season. Instead of a scary 19-0, they end up at 18-1 and are Super Bowl XLII runners-up rather than the champions.

There are plenty of reasons why they lost but I think the biggest is that the Patriots behaved as if the game was a foregone conclusion. As if nothing could possibly upset the applecart that is a perfect season so late in the game. But it appears someone forgot to tell the Giants they were supposed to be the footnote

Well that and the perceived mentality that playing the game was an afterthought and merely a formality. I'm sure that's now how the Patriots really felt the game was but that's certainly the feeling I got over the last couple of weeks.

And I'm sure the Giants came in feeling pissed off and ready to smash the Pats in the mouth. Especially after nearly beating them in week 17 a few weeks ago.

It wasn't inevitable but it felt like the Giants were alot hungrier, played alot harder and ended up winning. The perfect season fades into a footnote on the Giants huge upset Super Bowl victory.

The other big event this weekend was the debut of wrestling "champion" Brock Lesnar in the octagon competing in an MMA match for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He took on Frank Mir, a legendary fighter with insane submission skills. And Lesnar got submitted. I'll look forward to actually seeing the fight when it gets rebroadcast but I couldn't justify dropping fifty or sixty bucks on it. And Tim Sylvia was winning his fight with Nogueria when he got submitted. That'll be a good fight to see too. Why did I want Lesnar to lose? Simple, that haircut he sports is the worst thing I've seen since Mark Cuban started doing his homage to Canseco's bowlcut.

The bummer about the Monday after the Super Bowl (aside from my teams having been eliminated weeks ago) is that football is done for the year now. Which leaves us with hockey (which I like to watch) and basketball (which you cannot pay me to watch). The sports are slim pickings for a few months until baseball kicks back into gear.

Why Should Tax Payers Buy the Niners a New Stadium?

Dan Gillmor asks an important question in today's blog post: Fantasy Predictions of Sports Payback.

Why should a county or city or anyone but the franchise owners be buying a new stadium for a baseball or football team?

Aren't these massively for-profit enterprises that generate hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue? Why in the hell do they need to get a town or county to pay for their new home?

What is the benefit to the town? More traffic, more crime, more congestion. Sure, there's the name, the additional revenue that'll get to the town but it'll take a long, long time to pay off a $300 million stadium.

The more I think about this, the less sense it makes for anyone but the owners and team to pay for their own damned new stadium.

Unless I get free tickets, I don't want my taxes going to build a new stadium, I want my taxes to go to repairing our roads, improving our schools and actually going towards making my life and family life's better. That's what the tax contract is all about, not funding new homes for superrich sports franchise owners.
