I'm Glad I'm Not In High School Anymore

Its probably not big news outside of this area but a local football star from one of the real powerhouse high schools, De La Salle (with some amazing unbeaten streak to their credit, like 76 games, 7 or 8 YEARS without a loss), was shot to death last week.

The two main suspects are brothers, the older brother, at a whopping 18 years of age, is already in custody. But the younger brother, a saddening 15 years old and his life is already over, whose picture they keep showing on tv with crazy eyes, is still free and fleeing capture.

The football star was scheduled to leave for a full ride scholarship in Oregon just two days after he was shot to death. He had, by all accounts, an extremely brigh future ahead of him.

And why was he killed? Its appearing that the star and the 15 year old younger brother got into an argument a year ago while playing in a basketball. The kid was 14 at the time, he held on to his anger for a full year, probably knew his foe was slated to leave town, most likely for good, and planned a pre-meditated murder.

I went to a small rural New England public school and an even smaller, even more rural New England private school so the chances of my getting shot to death were pretty remote. Unless you count hunting season when it was just plain stupid to go into the woods. But it scares the crap out of me to think about being in high school now.

I never had to worry about being attacked, I never had to worry about gang bangin' dumbfucks who can't see beyond the present to recognize that the world does not, in fact, revolve around them or even care that they exist as yet.

High school, and all schools, should be a sanctuary, a place for those that want to learn to learn. A place of safety to improve oneself, not a place to duck bullies, thugs, morons and gang banging asswipes who will do nothing but drag the world down with their petty and short sighted criminality.

Luckily I've got plenty of time to figure out what we want to do with Graydon before he gets to the age of going off to school. But there is no damned way I am going to expose my boy to the tender mercies of freak buggers who murder people over stupid little arguments a year before.

Run fast, run hard and run as long as you can, little man, the long arm of the law is going to catch you and you get to spend the rest of your life behind bars, seething in your own stupidity. Thanks for making sure to be a lifelong societal parasite.
