Spelling Counts
I was just reading a random blog from the links and came across some guy's blog. Usual stuff, talking about whatever's happening in his life, something about a waffle house on the way to going gambling.

I can't really say what it was about because I was totally distracted and thrown by the blatantly unspell checked posts. Rife with mistakes, some causing me to scratch my head in wonder at what he was actually trying to say. I'm sure his response would be to shrug his shoulders and say that he knew what he was talking about. But that's stupid. You have a public web log because you have a message or messages you wish to deliver to the great unwashed and underweared clothed masses.

If your medium is the written word and you're not working some style like Toni Morrison's Beloved or other wacky style but this guy wasn't affecting any style aside from laziness. Heck, Blogger's got a built in spell checker (though it doesn't work on Macs, maybe because Mac users are better spellers? just kidding, flame off, kiddies).

Just like if you're medium is painting then you should make sure to use the proper cadmium white or whatever colors and the right paint brushes. You can't paint a house with a tiny brush, nor a masterpiece with a six inch wide broad stroking brush. Or, a much, much better analogy, consider a musician who just pulls his/her cello out of the case and starts playing, no tune up, no warm up, just instant on music. It'll be close but not quite right.

If someone knows they don't spell terribly well then they should take the extra minute or two to spell check their posts, its just a misguided message otherwise. I couldn't even finish the first post on the site because the writing was so stricken with mistakes. A teacher would not have accepted it and neither should the blogging community.

Okay, back to the regularly scheduled posts about love, upcoming weddings, trips to San Diego and plans upon plans for the future.
