I just read about a Shooting and Crash right near one of my schools. Close enough that a stray bullet or two could easily hit the buildings I work in. Yes, the incident took place over the weekend when there aren't kids all over the school but this still took place less than a block away.
Have I mentioned lately how much a despise the town I live in and the gang-banger jackasses who inhabit this town?
I wish there were some way to adequately relay to each and every gang banging wanker what a complete and utter waste of space they are on this planet. The culture of violence and disposable lives thoroughly disgusts me and I am absolutely looking forward to moving on. But I know it isn't going to be happening anytime soon since the housing market is trying to become a black hole and suck the known universe down into it.

An Unsettling Uptick in Gang Violence
There have been a rather uncomfortable number of gang violence assaults lately, including a broad daylight shooting in Live Oak, an armed robbery, several stabbings and more.
And the violence isn't being restricted to Watsonville, there are attacks taking place in Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley and other localities.
I usually do not care all that much about the gangbangers because they usually don't care much about me. I'm not within their target demographic but I do know that some wouldn't think twice about robbing me or harming me or my family.
Have I mentioned recently how much I dislike living in a gang warfare zone? Or that I have to think twice before putting on a jacket to leave the house to make sure I'm not wearing enemy colors.

Black Eyes and Sticky Wickets
My wife told me about her trip to a local park yesterday with the boys. She noticed a mother and her son who arrived after she had and that they were keeping to themselves, away from a gaggle of other mothers.
Nothing too unusual about that since not all parents want to be pals with every other parent they see.
But after the other group had left and it was just my wife and the boys she drifted closer. And it was hard to miss her big black eye.
Without prying it seemed pretty obvious what was happening and that she was a victim of domestic violence. Having lived through her own sister going through the same thing, my wife was still unsure of what to do. Wife beaters do not, all of a sudden, see the light and stop being abusive assholes. Generally what happens is there's an incident or episode that results in a violent reaction, there's an apology period, a honeymoon period and then a slow build up to another, sometimes escalated, violent episode.
They are rarely one time events, just like infidelity and pedophilia.
We talked about it and what she might have been able to do. We know that confronting her would not work, that offering help would likely result in more trouble for her and so, in the end, my wife didn't do anything.
I'd like to come up with some course of action should something like this repeat itself in our future. What would you have done?
And yes, a part of me wanted to find out where she lived and go take a baseball bat to the asshole but violence begets more violence and it wouldn't have solved anything anyway. I would have liked to have been able to give her the number of a women's shelter but I wasn't there and it could have caused more trouble too if her husband/boyfriend found it.

Why Is Sex Such a Taboo?
Vietnam is having Paris Hilton moment which is actually not true at all since the star of the sex video in this case was already a celebrity. And, instead of launching a career, it has ended hers. And Hoang Thuy Linh is actually very pretty and not the result of years of plastic surgery and millions of dollars in carefully planned publicity.
But still, why is there this awful taboo against sex? Every single person on the planet has it or wants it, what is the big friggin' deal (pun intended)?
How warped is our value system that violence is broadcast on every news channel all day every day but sex is hidden away and treated like the dirtiest thing ever?
