Longest Running Race, 3100 Miles Around One City Block

This is beyond strange, its the 10th Annual Self-Transcendence 3,100 Mile Race which takes place in Queens. Now 3,100 miles is a really long way to go and they are supposed to average 60 miles a day for nearly two months.

And the kicker? They run around a single city block, again and again and again. Some 5,000 laps. In the city, on pavement.

Has it begun to sound like a bad idea yet? They lost me at 3,100 miles and then really lost me at the around a single city block concept. I mean, I get the underlying concept of transcendance by repetitive motion but this just seems kind of stupid really. City air is bad for you, city streets are bad for your joints to run upon and this much over-training is really bad for your entire body. It seems to me that this would be more detrimental to the physical condition than helpful.

Which might explain why there are only 14 competitors.
