Oh yeah, that's what I did before breakfast. Fired up the chainsaw, and by fired up, I mean that I got the extension cord out, ran it into the backyard, plugged in the chainsaw and got my safety goggles on (sawdust in the eye hurts alot more than you might think). Yeah, yeah, I'm sure there are people questioning the fun factor with an electric chainsaw.
But the electric has lots of advantages over a gas powered model. One, you don't have to start it. Two, you don't have to fill it. And three, its much lighter than gas so you can weild it more easily.
Anyway, before breakfast this morning. I took the chainsaw into the backyard and did battle with an eight foot high, eight foot wide and thirty five foot long hedge of doom. It has been well entrenched back there for years, growing wildly and haphazardly, making a thicket of not especially tough but dense bush and hedge.
But the chainsaw gave me the power to smack it down and out. After a short battle that saw me recieve one minor flesh wound from an aggresive branch, half of the mighty bush had fallen to my scythe. I cleared it out, tossing the branches down to the back slope of the yard and out of the way.
If only breakfast hadn't intervened, I would have finished it off for good. But for now, half of it remains, awaiting my return tomorrow night after work when it too shall fall victim to the AC fury of the little chainsaw that roared.
Of course, I could have hit it after breakfast but then I wouldn't have been able to get in very much beach time. I got my gear together and jumping on the motorcycle to buzz up into town again. Lots of traffic for a Sunday but never a fear with that special third lane for bikes and really skinny cars.
And it was simply gorgeous here today. A really perfect day to go down to the beach and play some volleyball, hang out with friends and take advantage of the weather. My volleyball game was decent but short and I tried my best not to tweak out my shoulder any worse than it already is (going to see the doc this week) and, upon defeat, went down to the water's edge for a swim.
Now, let me be the first to tell you that the Monterey Bay in March is damned cold. Nuts climbing into your stomach cold. The cold that makes you wish you could get away with running back on to dry land screaming for mommy. But, with the weather comes beautiful girls and the counter desire to tough it out even though I've got a wife and puppy and kid on the way at home.
After hanging out and drying off a bit, I gathered my gear and made my way up the cliff and rode on home (past no less than 6 cops on the highway), hoping to get home in time to battle the bush again. But hunger and my newly recoifed wife convinced me otherwise and we went out to seek out a nice spot for some dinner. Fending heartburn P wasn't into Mexican (a tough deal in a town with a 50% Hispanic population) so we meandered around town until we came upon Miyuki, a sushi place that has a bunch of loyal customers at P's work. So we went in and had some of the best sushi we've had in a long time. Thier signature roll was called a Pajaroll (pa-ha-roll), it had hamachi and some other goodies in it and was lightly tempura'ed too. Simply awesome. Really, everything was excellent and we both had a very, very good dinner for a pretty reasonable price as well.
When we got home we found our first mild setback in the potty training of the hound by the front door which was a bummer twice because we'd left her in her corral AND she'd peed. So no more unsupervised corral action, when we're gone, she's in her crate until further notice to avoid these setbacks. We rolled our potty training back to an earlier stage and are back to leading her out on the leash to her spot.
Scheduled training for this week will be: Sit-stays, down-stays, heeling and breaking her of her habit of nipping and mouthing hands and other body parts. We'll see how it goes. She's been pretty excellent so far and I expect she'll continue but we'll see.
All in all, a really nice fun weekend and I'll miss my pup tomorrow, I'm sure. But that'll make coming home that much more exciting and cool.
Here's a few pics from the day: Johnny serving and a sweet chopper cruiser.
