PR Days for Gold
There are certain events that happen that PR, public relations, pros care about. Our lives are marked by today's things going off without a hitch, clean. Its hard to explain but for PR people, everything needs to go as planned. Not that it ever does but its important to plan, execute and quantify the success or failure of efforts.
And, as in the rest of life, its important to recognize failing efforts which would logically indicate that its important to mark successful efforts, or successful results because the two are not of necessity the same. Sometimes things just go as they should and its not so much the immediate effort, nor the recent past. While there is an incumbent focus on the now there's also a part of the plan that must be thinking down the road. PR is the cumulative efforts of years of interaction with press, analysts and clients, it is a terribly freakish juggling act at times. But then there are times when the wheels are greased, the world's doors open and, for a few brief and shining moments, opportunities present themselves.
Here's what today brought me. Rode my motorcycle into work (already a damned fine start), oh wait, woke up with Paula, that's the best start to my day and I do love having her here with me. So, woke up, turned off the alarm (which sounds awful and is a bad start to any day, maybe its time to go Ebaying for a new one), slipped back into bed for another half hour curled up with her.
Its a short ride to work, only a couple of miles but I can get my little bike going quick enough to make me grin in spite of the cold air. Work was not a whole lot of fun, one of my good pals out with a busted tail bone, another busting his ass under tight deadlines and a secretary with a chip on her shoulder (Paula puts it down to, effectively, unrequitable sexual tension but whatever). Not the best start to a work day but it improved steadily.
By the time I met with my boss for our weekly meeting to discuss what was happening in PRLand, things had gotten damned nice. Lunch with Brian and Paula at Lost Penis (really Los Pinos but what do you want, I've got alot of extra cycles to think about this shit). Stopped back in to the office to introduce her around and then up to Paul and Kim's to let the boy out. Ain't nothing as uplifting as playing with a happy puppy. Really.
Modoc was really too fun and I really and truly love that little puppy. He's growing at a record pace and he's hilarious, beautiful and more fun than almost anything else I could possibly imagine. Such unfettered exuberance is hard to capture though its irrationally contagious. Or maybe it just helped out a day that was rolling so sweetly for us already. And I get to be his godfather! Hehe, or dogfather as the case may be.
But let's get to the meat of the day and why it was such a fabulous PR day. Imagine an ideal situation where your company is in the paper everyday being quoted as respected authority. Its a holy grail of sorts for PR, the summit really. Branding your company along with the likes of the big hefe research shops (in my case) is the coup, the pulling of the wool. Or its just reaching the place where your client/company is supposed to be in the first place. Who knows really, perception is too closely linked with reality (look at the stock market). Today saw my company, my client, getting 13 different press mentions.
Now that's nothing for Microsoft which gets 13 hits in an hour. But for us, 13 hits today, including BusinessWeek, ZDNet, CNet, News.com and InfoWorld, is a landslide. An epic day really. Add in a couple of really superb ideas from the meeting and today just sort of becomes a moveable cornucopia.
After work I got to spend the evening with the woman I love who loves me back. Who will be silly and stupid just to make me laugh at her, who will tease me until she gets a rise out of me so she can kiss me sweetly and tell me how much she loves me. A woman who makes going to Long's an adventure. We cooked together, ate together, she kept me company as I cleaned up (it was my turn) and we basked in each other's company. A simple evening but satisfying in more ways than could ever be conveyed. I know that, when I'm done here, I'll get into my bed over there and she'll wrap her body around mine even in her sleep. Love even in sleep is a pretty cool concept.
And with an immediate future like that awaiting me, how could anyone be unhappy? Not I, said Marty McFly.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention the high speed run down Highway 1 on my SV to get to FedEx in time! Woohoo, nothing like it but at least I was wearing my leathers and riding gear so Layne shouldn't fret too much. Besides, I'm still in one piece!
