I love my Tivo, it gives me power over the idiot box. But they seem to think I've got a 2 second memory because they refuse to accept that I have read and understood the message about the need to connect to the server. I have, at last count, deleted the exact same message eight infuriating times this morning and it just keeps coming back.
What insane rationale could lead them to think I need so many reminders or that I really do NOT want to delete the message when I have deleted it eight times already? That is just asinine.
By the time I ended up leaving for work, I'd "deleted" the same ridiculous message more then 14 times. Which is about 13 times too many.
By the way, ever since replacing/upgrading the main hard drive we have tons of suggested viewing, more space to record shows we want than ever before and the interface is back to being somewhat zippy (the dying hard drive made everything slow, slow, slow).
There's still too much Oprah and Dr. Phil but at least they are more buried among my shows so it doesn't bother me so much. Not anywhere near as much as the messages that cannot be deleted though.

The Day the Tivo Died
It was with great sadness and a quiet hard drive that our Tivo expired last week. It had been struggling to work and had become difficult to watch so it wasn't a huge surprise but one morning it spent all day trying to power up unsuccessfully.
The strangest thing is how much of an impact the loss of the Tivo has made on our lives. Now, all of a sudden, we need to pay attention to what time it is and to turn on the box if there's a show we want to watch. It would feel quaint if it weren't so annoying.
And I can't stop time anymore, that's a bummer.
But we've only had to suffer for a few days as there's a new hard drive in the works and on the way. My wife wanted to upgrade to the HD Tivo but we would still want to keep this machine up and running since it is one of the coveted Lifetime subscription boxes.
That is, while many people are paying a monthly fee to Tivo, we paid one lump sum and never have to pay for Tivo service again. On that box. When we upgrade to HD we will probably have to start paying again since we missed the boat on the Lifetime HD service (plus it was either $700 or $800 and we didn't have that available at the time). But damn, HD Tivo has got to be about as close to television nirvana as you can get.
We'll get the new drive by Friday which means we miss Survivor so we'll have to watch it live, that'll be very strange.
Until then we will miss our Tivo which is kind of funny because I rarely watch tv, I just like having it ready for when I do have a few minutes. The upside to the hassle is that we'll be adding even more capacity to our Tivo and will be able to record around 180 hours of TV. And that's an awful lot of Oprah!

Tivo Features I'm Looking For
Tivo rocks, there is no question about it. It has completely changed how we watch and enjoy television. But, as with anything, there is always room for improvement. Here's my list of "Wants" for my Tivo.
1. If it has three thumbs down on it (i.e. shows I hate) then change the channel off of it.
2. If it has three thumbs up and I'm watching it then don't change the channel to a suggested recording, ever.
3. Figure out the difference between previous season reruns and new episodes.
4. If I've deleted a suggested recording three times without viewing it then stop recording it as a suggestion.
5. Stop recording channels that no longer broadcast.
6. A channel lock so that I can watch a show without having to keep telling it not to change to a suggested recording (sometimes I don't want to record it but still want to watch it).
I'm sure I'll come up with more but this is a pretty good list of feature requests for now. Tivo-techs, why don't you get started on these and I'll update this post as I come up with more.
