Baseball Bids Goodbye to One Class Act

It isn't a surprise but it is with a big twinge of sadness that Mike Matheny, the catcher for the SF Giants, was forced to announce his retirement.

Concussions end Matheny's career

As a catcher, he got drilled with guys trying to come home, he got hit with bats and, the topper, nailed in the face mask with 100 mile an hour foul tips. The result was alot of concussions that resulted in Post-Concussion Syndrome and the medical staff basically told him that there was no way he was ever going to be cleared to play again.

I listened to him talk with The Razor and Mr. T on KNBR the other night and it struck me again what a class guy he really is. He will be missed but he's not disappearing, he just can't play anymore and what's really important, at the end of the day, is that he takes care of himself. Baseball will march on, it always does.
