Another Techie Eats It
Well, I guess its semi-official and Webgain has tanked. Read about it on the cover of the newest issue of SD Times. Showed it to my boss because they are an outstanding account (not outstanding in that they were better than the others but that they still owed us money for our surveys). Which, I guess, will really mean almost nothing to most people. But its another nail in the high tech coffin, the bubble that burst and tossed so many of my friends and co-workers and partners and other various tangental companies and personel out into the void. The void of employment outside of the high tech sector. Like Layne, who's educated and smart and capable but is now waitressing and pondering the similarities between prostitution and waiting tables (there are many, I've done the same analysis).
Or the news of further layoffs at the pubs I work with. Editors with more seniority than I've got years in me, tossed like yesterday's coffee grounds. Tough time to be out on the street though I can't really say there's a very good time to be out on the street.
Which makes it that much more important to work hard and get the work done, prove value, prove worth, validate existence. And to that end, I'll put down the blog pen and pick up my red editting pen and jump back into the Chinese survey, that never ending bastard that always needs/wants/must have more time, effort, sweat, tears and cursing at SPSS (far too much to explain but its a PC based issue so that'll start you on the right track).
But the fog's holding strong for now, maybe it'll never clear up again and we'll live in the fog, enshrouded by chill sea air, purified against distraction by the deadened water hanging over everything.
That and I think I'm going to go and buy the new Eminem album at lunch today. Limewire wouldn't download a decent copy last night and then started to fold worse than a Chinese laundromat the day after Chinese New Year.
But how bad can any day be when I can ride my bicycle into work?
Anyway, last note before I get some work done. Here's a little peice I wrote a long time ago while living in CapeTown. ExPat in Seapoint. A nice little read though not according to T. Mike Walker at Cabrillo College but then he was a bit of a wanker anyway.
