The 529 Wrong Island Iced Tea
Okay, this is probably going to hurt some of you out there but here goes.
Not all that long ago, I was up at the Five Two Nine (one of two local bars in my neighborhood) while my housemate, Paul, was working. For some reason or another, maybe for no reason whatsoever, I wanted a Long Island Iced Tea (hey sometimes you don't want to mess around, you want to go straight for the big time).
Only problem is that the bar happened to be out of sour mix. Woops, hold on, getting ahead of myself. A Long Island is a great drink, lots of alcohol but very little of the pang of the firewater. Tasty and fun until you go to sit down and find yourself on the floor. A proper Long Island is easy to make but also easy to bugger all to hell. Here's my recipe, scale it up or down depending since I go for ratios and not absolute measures.
equal amounts of rum, vodka, tequila (white preferably), gin and triple sec
somewhere between twice as much and three times as much sour mix
and a splash of coke (enough to make the drink look like an Iced Tea)
served in the biggest glass available, maybe with a lemon on it for the Tea effect.
Drink and repeat until the bouncer escorts you to the door.
But on this particular Saturday afternoon, there was no sour mix in the house so we had to experiment.
With Jaegermeister instead of sour. Yep, just sent a chill down your spine didn't it?
This is the origin of the Wrong Island Iced Tea. Now five alcohols is enough to stumble most men, most women and heck, most horses. But when you replace two full shots (on the five shot measure standard) of non-alcoholic liquid with the cough syrup masquerading as a liquor, then the world becomes a very spirit-laden place in a big, big hurry. It was hard, hard work that required several retoppings with coke to make it palatable but in the end, that sucker went down. And I followed very shortly thereafter.
Next up, the Mojito, a minty, limey rum bugger that'll knock you down even while keeping your breath as fresh as fresh crushed (well muddled is the actual term) mint can. Fun to drink too! I'll post that one tomorrow.
